Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) refer to exclusive rights granted to individuals and organizations for their creations of the mind, such as inventions, literary and artistic works, symbols, names, images, and designs used in commerce. These rights are legally recognized and protected by national and international laws and include:
1. Patent rights: exclusive rights granted to inventors for a limited period of time, covering the making, using, selling, and importing of an invention.
2. Copyright: exclusive rights granted to creators of original works, such as literature, music, and software, covering the reproduction, distribution, and public performance of their works.
3. Trademark rights: exclusive rights granted to owners of distinctive logos, symbols, and names used in commerce, covering the use of these marks in connection with goods and services.
4. Trade secret rights: protection for confidential business information, such as recipes, formulas, and client lists.
IPR is designed to encourage innovation and creativity by providing creators and owners with the means to protect and monetize their works. However, the protection of IPR can also raise concerns about access to knowledge, particularly in fields such as medicine and technology. As a result, the balance between protecting IPR and promoting access to knowledge remains a critical and ongoing issue in many fields.
The Hindusthan College of Engineering and Technology was sanctioned with IPR Nodal Centre in 2021 by Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology, Government of Tamil Nadu.
